Philer-Up!: The Pen is almost finished.

Washington Nationals v Philadelphia Phillies - Game Two

I wrote a post a couple of weeks back about the bullpen and now it seems to be taking form. DeFratus and Diekman both had good shots at grabbing one of the open spots, but both were optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley today.

DeFratus started on the DL for the Phils last season with a strained elbow.  He seemed to be one of the few kids that were ready to make the jump to the big league club. Obviously, Rich Dubee thinks other wise…

DeFratus has to get his arm strength going,” Dubee said. “His arm is a little behind right now. His breaking ball is a little too big. He’s aware of that, via mlb.com

With those moves done, that leaves Stutes, Horst, Minor, Aumont and Valdes fighting for the last three spots. That would mean that the Phils would carry 12 pitchers to start the season. They had 12 pitchers on the roster last year to start the season.

My guess is that the Phils open with Pap, Adams, Bastardo, Durbin, Horst, Aumont and Minor in the pen.
