Darin “Babe” Ruf is going to the minors. In the beginning of spring training it seemed like he was the favorite to snag one of the corner outfield spots, while Dom Brown seemed to be the whipping boy for the Phils.
Any of the Phils people you heard from seemed to love Ruf. They worried about his “D” but loved his bat. Here is quote from Ruf after finding out he was sent down. Ruf:
It kind of caught me off guard a little,” Ruf admitted. “But, you know, it’s a part of the game. I’ve kind of compared myself to Junior (John Mayberry Jr.) and Brownie (Domonic Brown) a little bit. They’ve spent the better part of the last 2-3 years trying to improve in Triple-A and help the big league club as well. Hopefully I’ll be able to do that at some point this year as well.”via philly.com
Most of the reports out of spring training were that Ruf looked pretty damn awful in the field. Amaro talked about Ruf…
I think he’s getting better, I think he’s improved and I think (being here) has been good for him,” Amaro said. “But he’s got some work to do to be an everyday left fielder in the big leagues.” via philly.com
This shit sounds familiar.
Ruf hit .246 with 2 home runs with 6 doubles in 19 games this spring. He had a slow start, but his bat has been better in the past two weeks. The kid has played a lot of baseball over the past year.
While Dom just keeps hitting (.397) with two doubles, six bombs and 12 RBIs. His on-base percentage is .465. So Delmon Young will be starting once he is fully healthy. He did hit a bomb today in a rehab game. I wonder how much he weighs.
