Aldon Smith

With a busted laptop and a baby on the way, I haven’t been able to post since after the draft.  Good thing about that though is I have had a lot of time to think of some articles I wanted to post throughout the summer about fantasy football and today I am looking at dynasty leagues and the Individual Defensive Players (IDP) aspect.

With any dynasty league, youth is extremely important to build around.  Being able to find a young stud that you can plug and play in your fantasy team for 6-7 years without a second thought can be a comforting feeling.   That’s why I think that this would be a good time to introduce my top 5 IDPs age 23 or under.  These are pillar to build around on defense for at least the next 5 years. Types of players that should never be dropped…ever, in any IDP league.

1.  Luke Kuechly, LB (22 years old)

His rookie year was extremely underrated and flew very much under the radar due to the poor season that Carolina had, but Kuechly is a point per tackle monster and will easily get 10 points per game on defense.  A 160 tackles year in and year out is not out of the question for this guy.

2.  Aldon Smith, DE/OLB (23 years old)

19.5 sacks, 3 FF and an INT make Aldon Smith a premier pass rusher at the age of 23.  He is a building block on defense for IDP and I don’t think he is a player that anyone could ever consider trading at this point.  Entering his 3rd season, I am expecting Aldon Smith to get at least 22 sacks and challenge for the record of total sacks in a season throughout his career.

3.  Patrick Peterson, DB (22 years old)

He is entering his 3rd year in the league and isn’t even 23 years old yet.  His punt return skills mixed with his ability to tackle and make plays on defense make him a dynasty football gem for IDP.  7 INTs last year!  Gotta have that type guy!

4.  Bobby Wagner, LB (23 years old)

This is an underrated LB!  He is hurt a bit being in the northwest of the country in terms of notoriety, but he produces all the same.  He had 140 tackles, 2 sacks and 3 picks his rookie year and now that Pete Carroll has that trust in him, look for even more production from this guy in 2013.

5. Lavonte David, LB (23 years old)

He might seem a little undersized for a LB at only 6’1”, 233 lbs but I guess looks can be deceiving in this case. Only 23 years old and he racked up 139 total tackles and got to the QB twice.  He is a 3-DOWN LB who will easily be in the top 10 LBs for the next 7-8 years.
