Homer strikes again. Homer just loves to acquire the rights to a player before the start of free agency (July 5). You can now add Islanders “D-Man” Mark Streit to that category.
Streit, 35, made $4.1 million last season as a member of the Islanders. He has 65 goals and 223 assists for 288 points in 491 career games. Streit is a good offensive “D-Man” and will help out on the power-play. He was the captain of the Islanders the past two years. As for his defensive side, it’s just OK.
Homer is trying to go 3 of 5 in these types of moves. He was successful with Kimmo Timonen and Scott Hartnell when he traded for their rights back in 2007. It worked for Bryz as well back in 2011. Where it didn’t work was for “D-Man” Dan Hamhuis back in 2010 and for goalie Evgeni Nabokov back in 2010.
Bob McKenzie of TSN thinks that the Flyers will have to pony up.
Streit, BTW, is a 35+ contract, meaning cap hit counts even if he retires/quits. Likely be looking for long-term deal in $5M/yr range. — Bob McKenzie (@TSNBobMcKenzie) June 12, 2013
So the Flyers are about to throw money around again. Nothing new there.
Streit had 6 goals and 21 assists in 48 games this past year. The Flyers got him for forward Shane Harper and a 2014 fourth-round draft pick.
