The Flyers did what they do best, get a player past their prime (Roenick, Amonte, Oates, Coffey, ect..). Though I actually believe this one makes sense. The Flyers have signed former number 1 overall pick (1998) Vinny Lecavalier to a 5 year-deal worth 22.5 million. Yes, I know that Vinny is 33 years-old and past his prime. BUT he still is a solid player and will be a perfect second-line center.
Vinny is good at faceoffs and he will help mentor the young guys (Schenn, Coots). Vinny had 32 points (10 goals, 22 assists) last season in 39 games. He has a career 874 points (383 goals, 491 assists) in 1037 games (14 seasons).
With this move the Flyer did go right back over the cap. They had $4.18 million in space before the deal, though they likely won’t be over the cap for much longer. There are still rumors of Braydon Coburn being moved for equipment bags and maybe even Andrej Meszaros being traded. I really can’t see Meszaros being moved because of his injury history. I am not sure why anyone would take him. Maybe Matt Read gets moved. Something will happen.
So the Flyers still need a starting goalie or another goalie to tandem with Steve Mason. The target? It might be Tim Thomas. Thomas, 39, won the Vezina, then Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP in 2011, when the Bruins won the Stanley Cup. He also might be as nutty as Bryz . So there’s that…
Speaking of more rumors, the Flyers are rumored to be talking to the Winnipeg Jets for Evander Kane and Dustin Byfuglien. That rumor did come from a guy that likes to “BS” mostly though. Like I said earlier something is going to happen soon.
